IT’S FUCKIN SUMMERTIME
..and after long silence (and what felt like the most brutal Midwestern winter ever), there’s new news rumbling at 25D HQ:
1: 2 new releases at the plant!
25D 034: NINETEEN//NINETEEN - “DISCOGRAPHY” 7”/DVD
NINETEEN//NINETEEN (re: 1919, nineteennineteen, etc) were a very short lived band from MPLS that existed from 1999 - 2000. Members included Kerry (Makara, Welcome The Plague Year, etc) on vocals, Ian (The Infinity Dive, etc) on vocals, Chris (Line Dot Star, etc) on guitar, Seth (The Book Of Dead Names, The Infinity Dive, etc) on bass and Mark (The Khayembii Communique, The Infinity Dive, etc) on drums. We were also joined on tour by Tony (Usurp Synapse) playing 2nd guitar.
This release compiles the 4 song demo we recorded on side A and a 6 song radio show we recorded on tour at WNYU on side B (both lovingly, generously ‘remastered’ by my dear Knol Tate), along with a DVD containing 2 full live sets documenting both versions of the band. One time pressing of 100 copies, all on color vinyl with elaborate, personalized artwork. (please note: this is not the final cover art).
25D 035: HYDROPARK - ‘CIRCUIT 2’ LP
Hydropark's route from the moment of inspiration to a publicly shared finished product is always indirect. After our first album crawled into existence in 2016, having it out in the world unexpectedly led to touring opportunities, positive feedback and a weird new feeling that people were listening. We started getting together more often and slowly assembled a small studio to capture new ideas, recording every practice or jam and sometimes returning to the best moments for overdubs. Songs came and went, tested in performance or recorded in different versions. With no hourly rates to keep track of we could try every approach. In the process, we ended up with dozens of tracks and fragments. Some were fully architected songs, some were ideas for samples that outgrew themselves, some were raw, aimless riffs.. the "has potential" file had grown full and random. Inspired by the quickly shifting aesthetic of beat tapes, Circuit 2 is an edit of the best results of hours and hours of experiments, songs switching at the first sign of waning interest. The full chemistry of Hydropark is on display, with various combos of band members, solo pieces, instrument switching and a fully collaborative mixing and editing process. Gears change recklessly, with 18 tracks quickly jumping from ambient glimmering to dazed disco sludge, manic horror movie soundtrack vibes to 2009-approved chillwave. The songs move in hyper nonlinear motion but gel into a strangely cohesive chronicle of ever-shifting evolution, like watching the weather change from the passenger seat on a cross country road trip.
Our friends at 25 Diamonds are pressing up a one-time edition of 200 LPs of Circuit 2, with hand silkscreened covers.
Both should be available in early Autumn!
2: 3 more new releases in the immediate works!
Next on board is
..with of course a lot of additional possibilities/chatter simultaneously.
3: 2 new interviews up!
New(ish) interviews have been posted with Fred Thomas (FAILED FLOWERS, HYDROPARK, etc) and Sonny Kay (OPTIONAL BODY, etc etc). Please give them a peek at the interviews page alongside earlier interviews conducted with TEENAGE MOODS and Knol Tate (DELETER, etc)
4: 1 new webstore!
Storenvy got real sucky for both buyers and sellers, so we switched over to limitedrun.com to save money for all involved. The Store/Distro link has been updated to reflect this.
5: 2 new ways to waste time online!
I’ve been taking really poor quality videos at shows lately (in addition to a constant stream of random pictures). They can be seen here, respectively:
Stay punk as fuck, as much now as ever. Start preparing to vote Trump the fuck out of office. It is long overdue time to no longer accept or settle for the ‘lesser of two evils’. Change takes courage and belief and action.
5 NEW RELEASES OUT ON 08/01/18!!
The new batch is FINALLY out -- 5 new releases at once. I am so very tired.
25D 029: No Statik - ‘What Did You Give Away When You Gave in?’ 7”
3 exclusive new songs that work as a companion piece to their new LP on Iron Lung Records, due out on 8/31/18.
This is No Statik. This may be the end.
300 copies pressed -- 200 on black vinyl, 50 on color vinyl with alternate inserts for band and mail order exclusively, 50 copies on color vinyl with alternate covers made for EINOK 4 fest that are long gone.
Count your blessings while they exist.
25D 030: Lux Vanitas - ‘The Secret Life Of…’ LP
In the mid 90s there was a band from the Twin Cities called Impetus Inter (Bloodlink Records, etc) who were easily the most influential local band to me ever to this day. And so they broke up. Then 3/5th of them started a new band with a new rhythm section and named it Lux Vanitas. They took the sound of 90s hardcore via Gravity Records/Vermiform that Impetus Inter had championed but incorporated a distinctly more "garage rock" sound (think The Cramps, The Mummies, The Peechees and not The White Stripes/blah blah blah, please, dear reader).
Lux Vanitas released a 7" on Mark Telfian's old label, Paralogy Records (that unfortunately suffered a horrible mastering job), and in 1997, created this -- a 9 song LP, recorded by former member Dave Gardner (who's since done mastering for Hot Snakes, Dillinger 4, The Marked Men, etc etc) and mixed by Tim Green (of Nation Of Ulysses, The Fucking Champs, also etc etc). Originally planned to be split released by GSL Records and Troubleman Unlimited, it was instead scrapped and lost when the band called it quits before it could come out.
And now, here it is. 21 years later. Pressed in a micro-quantity of just 138 copies, all on random color vinyl with hand glued covers, hand stamped center labels, each copy hand numbered -- a true labor of love for you from 25 DIAMONDS.
25D 031: Lilac - ‘Barbed Wire Entanglement’ b/w ‘On A Wheel’ 7”
Debut release by this new Chicago group featuring Anya Davidson (of Coughs, Cacaw and comic fame) along with former members of Anatomy Of Habit, Witch Hat, etc.
Anya says "Yeah I would just call us "heavy, damaged rock with doom elements" or something. Like a doomier Jesus Lizard? I dunno. It feels arrogant to compare us to other way more well-known bands. This stuff is hard for sure". Kenny says "I think we were all in agreement of listing Karp, Harvey Milk, and Unwound as a "for fans of" reference". I would add that they are loud, mean, political and scary as shit. I also hear elements of some of my obscure 90s favorites such as Love Life, Universal Order Of Armageddon, Cherubs and Killdozer.
We can all agree that this is a 2 song 7", limited to 300 copies pressed with 200 on black vinyl and 100 on random color vinyl for band and mail order exclusively.
25D 032: Deleter - ‘Levitate The Pentagon’ CS
Levitate The Pentagon, the seventh release from the Minneapolis group Deleter, is a concept album based loosely on generations of comic book lore interweaved with social/political commentary on the history of western culture's role in the world today.
Deleter is comprised of vocalist/guitarist Knol Tate (Askeleton, Killsadie), bassist/vocalist Travis Collins (A.M. Stryker, We Are The Willows), drummer/percussionist Josh McKay (Farewell Continental, Small Towns Burn A Little Slower) and guitarist Jordan Morantez (Blue Green, The King & The Thief).
Formed in 2012, Deleter quickly managed to refine their sound to a bold, loud, yet dynamic sonic force. Tate’s lyrics comprised of poetry with classic and surreal lyricism create a voice with a unique perspective. Having long lists of clear influences like garage rock, post-punk, hardcore punk, psychedelic rock, as well as less obvious influences like 60’s biker, surf, spy and sci-fi movie soundtracks; Deleter blends genres sometimes calling to mind music as diverse as Wire, The Fall, Public Image LTD, Davie Allan, The Ventures, The Ex, Born Against and Psychedelic Furs. No matter the inspiration or the influence, Deleter has been able to create their own sound in the time they’ve been together. Fierce, catchy, noisy, and reflective; almost militaristic, Deleter sounds deliberate, sincere and purposely crafted. For fans of forward thinking punk music and forward thinking comics.
Pressing of 100 copies on professionally dubbed and packaged cassettes.
25D 033: ‘We Work With What We Have: One Month Of Punk (March 2018)’ Zine
24 page, full color photo zine documenting, well, the month of March 2018 by a punk (who is me -- Ian, owner of 25 DIAMONDS LABEL). Includes a trip to OKC for Everything Is Not Okay 4 fest, a visit to Chicago and Milwaukee to see some shows, and some favorite bands that played back home.
Bands featured (most with multiple pictures): The Wedding Present, Xylitol, Stiff Love, Shapeshifter, Protomartyr, Patsy, No Statik, Lilac, Hydropark, Hot Snakes, Exotica, Drugcharge, Blue Dolphin, etc.
Pressing of 77 numbered copies, half of which will surely be given away for free to friends.
Also added are numerous killer new distro items, a used section of awesome singles i pick up on the cheap and can’t stand to see sitting in bins, very limited test pressings of 25D releases with personalized packaging… other things…
As always, a new batch is already under way as well.
Your homework, comrades:
Protect reproductive rights
Overthrow the government
Love more than you think is possible
Face your fears and insecurities as if they are a creative art project
Stay punk as fuck
xx Ian / 25D
HOW TO SUCK HORRIBLY AT RUNNING A "BUSINESS":
it's been almost a year since last update.. life can get so wild, ya know? since then, we released the XYLITOL demo 7", which is all but like a dozen copies or so from out of print. they rule as a band and as people, and i am thrilled i got to work with them - no idea why i never got around to writing it up when it came out. que sera.
so now it's already february of 2018, somehow, and there's the following news to announce:
A. 4 new releases in production. they be:
25D 028: Беломорканал - 's/t' CS
25D 029: NO STATIK - 'what did you give away when you gave in?' 7"
25D 030: LUX VANITAS - 'the secret life of..' 12"
25D 031: LILAC - 'barbed wire entanglement/on a wheel' 7"
music, art, pressing info, etc to follow soon.
B. we made a new batch of shirts to celebrate the announcement of new releases (i.e. to make some $$$). they look like this:
and are based off a photograph taken by your friend and mine, Martin Sorrondeguy. black ink on white Gildan brand shirts, sizes S - XL available. 1 time printing. also added some killer distro items, including the shapeshifter demo (members of ataxxia, geiger counter, etc - seriously incredible band), citric dummies lp, rashomon 7", etc.
C. as always, an entirely new batch of releases after these is already being formulated.
D. direct mail order is always a label's favorite, of course, but if not here, why not consider buying from one of numerous friends' labels/distros who carry our releases: Ebullition, Revolver, Feel It, Iron Lung, World Gone Mad, Sorry State, Warthog Speak, Gilgongo, SPHC, Neck Chop and Live Fast Die in the States, La Vida Es Un Mus, Rough Trade and Per Koro in Europe and Punk And Destroy and Waterslide in Japan, among others i'm most certainly forgetting and already remorseful to?
E. 2018 marks the 7th year of the label's existence, and this month, my 8th year of sobriety. remember: almost anything is always possible.
F. stay punk as fuck forever. see you at OKC fest in march?
F+ (seriously though, give us some $)
Very little positive to say - 2016 was a shit year, and 2017 is looking even scarier. Fuck Trump, fuck the United States and fuck everyone who got us into this living hell. I only pray we finally learn to love and care for one another despite our differences before it's too late for us all.
At least we still have artistry. With that said, there are 3 new releases out now on 25 DIAMONDS:
25D 024: ATAXXIA 4 SONG 7"
Debut vinyl release by this Minneapolis band with members of Varix, Mind Control, Scaphe, etc. 'Searing Scandinavian-influenced hardcore punk.' 300 copies pressed with multiple colored, hand screened covers and killer artwork throughout by Emily Styles.
25D 025: DELETER 'MEANINGLESS CHANTS' CS/ART ZINE
New 6 song EP by Deleter, hot on the heels of the 'Oblique Seasons' LP released on 25 DIAMONDS in 2016. Limited to 100 copies with wheat pasted, hand stamped manila envelope covers. Cover artwork by Jim Blaha (The Blind Shake), 16 page zine with artwork by Derek Van Gieson (Fantagraphics Books) and handwritten lyrics by Knol Tate. Mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control). Includes a download code.
25D 026: WRANGLER BRUTES 'DENVER 10/08/04' CS
Full 14 song live set by Wrangler Brutes, pro dubbed and limited to 100 copies.
From Wikipedia, of all resources:
'The band recorded their October 8, 2004 show at Monkey Mania in Denver, CO with Permanent Record Studios. The concept was to release a "bootlegged" live version of their Zulu album, but due to the band's split the live CD was never released.'
All releases are available now through the web store, varying distros and punk record stores everywhere.
Next batch is the XYLITOL demo 7" and Беломорканал CS in March. After that comes the GEIGER COUNTER 12", NO FUNERAL/LIVID 12", and a couple more releases planned too early to officially anounce.
All of this still assumes we still have a planet to live on, of course.
Stay punk as fuck, friends. Do not give up hope and do not give up on radical change.
XX 25D 2017.
NEW BATCH OF RELEASES OUT NOW!
today marks the release of the following:
25D 023: NO STATIK 'EARHAMMER SOUNDSYSTEM' 12"
Vinyl version of the limited 'EARHAMMER SOUNDSYSTEM' cassette released by NO STATIK. A complete reworking of their LP 'EVERYWHERE YOU AREN'T LOOKING' (Prank Records) -- this is an entirely new beast in itself.
'Remixed and completely fucked with by the band and their engineer, Greg Wilkinson. They incorporate elements of techno, noise and loop effects to tear their songs apart and put them back together anew. I'm still on the fence, but this might be my favorite NO STATIK release to date.' (Remote Outposts)
Anyone who's heard NO STATIK knows they're easily one of the best contemporary hardcore bands going, and I'm honored to get to work with them.
400 copies pressed on heavy weight black vinyl. Stream/download here:
25D 022: TEENAGE MOODS 'SADNESS'/'SO LOW' 7"
2 brand new songs by TEENAGE MOODS, finding the band at their 'moodiest' yet. While as catchy and well crafted as ever, these songs have a somber beauty to them that add a whole new dimension to the band's sound and versatility. This is the band I have worked with the longest with 25 DIAMONDS, and these are easily 2 of my favorite songs they've ever written.
300 copies pressed on color vinyl, including a download code. Stream/download here:
25D 021: FAILED FLOWERS 'FAILED FLOWERS' LP
Debute LP by this Michigan/Montreal band featuring Fred Thomas (of the incredible solo LP 'ALL ARE SAVED' (Polyvinyl Records), easily one of the best records of 2015). 9 songs of insanely catchy, well crafted dream pop, bringing to mind classics of the late '70s Rough Trade Records catalog, the best tracks of the C86 comp and modern contemporaries such as Veronica Falls, etc.
400 copies pressed on heavy weight color vinyl, including a download code. Stream/download here:
All are available from the 25 DIAMONDS store (along with numerous recently added awesome distro items), and are currently en route to stores and distros everywhere.
Finally, we here at 25 DIAMONDS are incredibly sad to mention the passing of a dear friend of many years, Nick/Blood Of The Young Records. He was an incredibly passionate, kind and generous person, and he is missed and loved beyond belief.
